Grammar
Four key ideas of Mundari grammar
Mundari word order is SOV β first the subject, then the object, and the verb right at the end. Nouns do not change form for gender or number; the work is done by postpositions (-π£π€ -re in, -ππ€ -te to / with, -πππ€ -ate from) and by small markers attached to the verb.
Pronouns β two forms of βweβ
| Singular | Dual | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / we (including the listener) | aΓ± | alaΕ | abu |
| We (excluding the listener) | β | aliΕ | ale |
| You | am | aben | ape |
| He / she / they | aeΚ | akin | ako |
The biggest differences from Hindi and English: Mundari has a dual (a separate form for exactly two), and two words for βweβ β πππ abu when the listener is included, πππ€ ale when not. For possession, add -ππ -aΚ: ππ-ππ aΓ±-aΚ mine, ππ§-ππ am-aΚ yours.
Building a verb
πππ§ jom = to eat. From this one root:
πππ§-ππ-π¨-π jom-ta-n-a β is eating (continuous tense)
πππ§-π’π€-π‘-π jom-ke-d-a β has eaten (completed)
π-πππ§ a-jom β to feed someone
ππ€π¨ππ-ππ-π¨-π senoΚ-ta-n-a β is going Β· ππ€π¨ππ¦-π senog-a β will go / goes
How do you say βI have β¦β?
Mundari has no verb like βhaveβ. You say β βis there a book with you?β:
ππ§-πππ-π£π€ π’ππππ π§π€π¨ππ?
Am-taΚ-re kitab menaΚ? β Do you have a book?
ππ-πππ-π£π€ ππ€ππ-π’π π§π€π¨ππ-π’π-π.
AΓ±-taΚ-re seta-ko menaΚ-ko-a. β I have dogs.
The negative forms are different words: πππ¨ππ banoΚ (for inanimate things), ππππ¦πππ-π baΕgaiΚ-a (for living beings, βhe/she is not thereβ).
Negation β π’π βkaβ
To say βno / notβ, put π’π ka before the verb: π’π-π π‘ππ£π-π ka-Γ± dari-a βI cannot do itβ; πππ£π auri means βnot yet / not so farβ.
Question words
ππ’ππ€ okoe who Β· π’ππ¨π cana what Β· π’ππ£π€ kore where Β· π ππ§πππ cimtaΕ when Β· πππππ’πππ€ cilikate why Β· πππ§ππ¨ππ ciminaΕ how much. Yesβno questions end with ππ? ci?
Number β -π’ππ¨ / -π’π -kin / -ko
ππ€ππ seta dog β ππ€ππ-π’ππ¨ seta-kin two dogs β ππ€ππ-π’π seta-ko dogs (many). Gender is only living vs non-living β there is no masculine / feminine.
